I apologize for not updating this blog for so long…… I guess it’s been a full 2 months without an update. So here’s what’s happened since the Easter weekend VIR race……..
Well, after the big VIR weekend, we were left with 2 key wins, but also left without a bumper or splitter on the car. I ordered a cheap bumper cover online (the key structural piece, the metal horizontal bumper support, was unharmed) and began trying to figure out how to construct a replacement splitter. In an effort to save money overall this year, I’m trying to avoid just buying brand-new stuff all of the time, and the bumper cover/splitter/dive planes would be well over $1000 if I bought them all new. We began to look around and see what we had to work with after VIR. Like I said, the main bumper support was perfectly fine, it just didn’t have a bumper cover anymore. I had an older, but semi-functional Evo-I splitter that I kept in the trailer as a spare. And I also had the full Evo-II tray from VIR, the main large flat tray section had survived in one piece, but the “air damn” portion, the vertical piece that attached to the bumper cover, was snapped off. In the end, we decided to use the EVO-I spare splitter as the air damn, epoxy and bolt it to the EVO-II main tray, make some splitter supports, and then have the entire setup sprayed gloss black. As you can see from the end result below (before we sprayed it black), it turned out just fine. Stronger than before (likely due to the supports, and the fact that I used better and more bolts this time), and right at the maximum size. That was the main repair needed after VIR, so we were basically ready to go for the Mid-Ohio Memorial Day Premier event!
